Prelude, Fugue and Foxtrot (1997)

Prelude, Fugue and Foxtrot was composed while I was a doctoral student at the University of Southern California. I was studying counterpoint and at the same time, I had been commissioned to write a piece for horn and piano by Ed Allen, then Principal Horn of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. I decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to write a double fugue, preceded by a stately and somewhat pan-tonal Prelude, and followed by a Foxtrot with a slightly displaced and hiccupping rhythm, for a wonderful horn player with a great sense of fun.

Commissioned by Ed Allen

Instrumentation: horn and piano

Duration: 13 minutes

‘Prelude, Fugue and Foxtrot’ performed by Kelly Langenberg (horn) and Katherine Petersen (piano)
